LOCATION
The Municipality of Talacogon is one of the municipalities of Agusan del Sur, Region XIII, between 8º 10’ to 8º 30’ Latitude and 125º 30’ to 125º 50’ Longitude. It is bounded on the north by the Municipality of San Luis and Prosperidad, on the east by San Francisco and Rosario, on the south by the Municipality of La Paz, and on the west by the Province of Bukidnon. Talacogon is 28 kilometers from the National Highway traversing the Municipality of Prosperidad. It is 36 kilometers from the Provincial Government Center of Agusan del Sur via Prosperidad but only 26 kilometers via Brgy. Rizal and Borbon to the Provincial Capital and 97 kilometers away from Butuan City, the nearest urban city in the Caraga Region.
Territorial Jurisdiction and Barangay Subdivision
The Territories of Talacogon reached the boundaries of the Province of Bukidnon going West. It is composed of 16 barangays, 5 of which are urban and 11 rural. The town is located in the Southern Central portion of the defunct province of Agusan, (now divided into two provinces, the north, and the south), which was formerly a Sub-Province of Surigao, and situated along the Agusan River, now a part of Agusan del Sur.
Land Area
The total approximate area of Talacogon excluding the contested area is 40,525.04. However, a contested area by San Luis, La Paz, San Francisco, and Prosperidad is estimated at 41,375.1711 ha. Initially, a total approximate area of 26,612.04 ha surveyed under Cad-1118-D and additional approximate area of 1,851.00, the portion plotted based on the updated map of Cad-1118-D that is covered by Court Decision Re: Civil Case No. 837, resolved by the RTC and made final and executory on July 18, 1997, and entry of judgment by the Court of Appeal on November 7, 1997, subject to change when the boundary disputes between municipalities of San Francisco, San Luis, and La Paz is resolved.
And additional land area of 12,062 was awarded by DENR-LMB (Land Management Bureau) dated 31 May 2000. Portions waived by the Municipality of La Paz in a joint Resolution No. 01 S-1999 of both Sangguniang Bayan of La Paz and Talacogon dated January 6, 1999.
Land Area Distribution by Barangay
The Barangay with the biggest land area is Desamparados with 5,013.51 hectares or a percentage of 19% considered to be upland and classified as the Timberland area of the municipality. Next is Barangay Del Monte with 4,010.86 hectares or 15% which has the biggest bulk of Alienable and Disposable land areas in the locality.
Barangays with the smallest land area are San Isidro (43.63 hectares), San Agustin (368.25 hectares), Labnig (569.52 hectares), and Culi Ram (749.15 hectares). These are all classified as Alienable and Disposable areas which are all under the Agrarian Reform Communities which are assisted by the Department of Agrarian Reform programs and projects, especially in the titling and provision of infrastructures.
The existing concessionaires managed by PTFI, CSDC, and other companies should remain in the production area which should adhere to the rules and regulations of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR).
